Customer
A Dutch traffic and transportation consultancy service, measures the roughness of asphalt on roads
Challenges
- If the roughness is below a standard norm, the surface of the road should be replaced
- Finding a connection between the roughness of a stretch of road and the number of accidents per million vehicle kilometers
Solution
Due to advanced data mining techniques all different variables could be analyzed; Besides te roughness of asphalt, also speed limit, lighting, number of lanes, percantage of trucks etc. were meassured. After this analysis a model was built, dividing stretches of road into five different classes, each with a significantly different number of accidents. With the help of this model, a simulation was carried out to determine what the increase in accidents would be for a given decrease in roughness.
