Transport

Customer

A Dutch traffic and transportation consultancy service, measures the roughness of asphalt on roads

Challenges

  • If the roughness is below a standard norm, the surface of the road should be replaced
  • Finding a connection between the roughness of a stretch of road and the number of accidents per million vehicle kilometers

Solution

Due to advanced data mining techniques all different variables could be analyzed; Besides te roughness of asphalt, also speed limit, lighting, number of lanes, percantage of trucks etc. were meassured. After this analysis a model was built, dividing stretches of road into five different classes, each with a significantly different number of accidents. With the help of this model, a simulation was carried out to determine what the increase in accidents would be for a given decrease in roughness.

  • Correlations between different variables do exist
  • Derive optimal levels of roughness of parts of the road network
  • Correct simlations can be done (eg. how many accidents will happen when roughness decreased by 5%?)
  • 30%
Better understanding of consequences of certain traffic solutions
